“I never imagined our village could come together like this. The volunteer has taught us so much about education, inclusion, and supporting each other,” says Umwiza Alice, a mother of three from Nyarubande Village.
Over the past few months, Nyarubande Village in Kampanga Cell, Kinigi Sector, Musanze District, has witnessed a remarkable transformation thanks to the efforts of a dedicated CorpsAfrica volunteer. CorpsAfrica, a nonprofit organization operating across Rwanda and several African countries, deploys young volunteers to rural communities to support local development through education, inclusion, and youth empowerment.
In Nyarubande, the volunteer’s mission has centered on education and inclusivity. Literacy sessions have been organized for both children and adults, enabling residents to improve their reading and writing skills. “I never thought I could learn so much outside school. These sessions have given me confidence to help my children with their homework,” Umwiza adds with a smile.
The volunteer has also played a key role in promoting disability inclusion, collaborating with local leaders to host workshops that raise awareness about accessibility and equal participation. Families are learning the value of embracing everyone’s abilities, regardless of physical or mental challenges.
Beyond education, the volunteer has established youth and girls’ clubs, providing safe spaces where young people can discuss leadership, menstrual hygiene, and personal growth. These gatherings have become a cornerstone of community life, empowering youth to lead and contribute to development initiatives.
The results are already visible: school attendance has increased, community unity has strengthened, and local participation in development projects has grown. “I feel proud of our village. Everyone is working together now to make life better,” says Kamanzi Eric, a respected community leader.
The story of Nyarubande proves that meaningful change can start with one person’s commitment. Through the work of CorpsAfrica volunteers, villages like this are learning that development isn’t only about resources — it’s about collaboration, compassion, and empowerment.
Today, Nyarubande Village stands as a shining example of what can happen when people come together to build a more inclusive and hopeful future.
