MKUR graduate turns to YouTube for employment

Gatari Regis completed his Bachelors in Media and Mass Communication at Mount Kigali University in the year 2022.

Noticing the bulk of the responsibilities that awaited a modern day youth, he opted to go for the long term success strategy rather than the job seeking journey that awaits every graduate.

In 2023, after officially ending his internship with Sana Radio a Kigali based radio station, Gatari started to pursue his long-term dream of covering sports this time round not with the main stream media but with digital media.

Gatari created ”The Urban Podcast Rw” with a tagline ‘spotainment’ as it was to offer both sports and entertainment.

Speaking to him, Gatari says creating YouTube content started as a hobby until he started earning from it.

A research carried out in 2022 by “OBERLO” shows that there are over 2.6 billion YouTube users.

It’s safe to say that YouTube is the most popular video platform out there. The simplicity of YouTube is one of the many reasons why it has exploded in popularity over the years: it is so easy for content creators to share their content with a large audience and as a result, there’s a wide range of content to choose from; whether it’s endless beauty tutorials, product reviews, gaming channels, or hours of boxing videos, YouTube has it all.

With this, Gatari was motivated to find his mark in the YouTube business beginning with a sports show named “Ze Smash” on his channel which has received quite good viewership from with MKUR and the outside world for the past six months now having over 1,700 subscribers.

On his show, Gatari hosts fellow journalist William Rabbin a sports journalist from Isango star among others.

People getting started on YouTube often assume that revenue is based on video views or subscribers, but that’s not the case. Instead, YouTube video revenue is structured around a “cost-per-view” model, which means you get paid a certain amount for every video watched on your channel. So to start earning money directly through YouTube, you must have at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in the past year. Once you reach that, you can apply to YouTube’s Partner Program and monetize your channel“.

There you have it, don’t wait to be employed, employ yourself through creating YouTube content.
