AUTO24, one of Rwanda’s leading importers of environmentally friendly vehicles, has delivered 35 electric-powered cars to Treize Ride, a public transport company, marking a major step toward reducing emissions in the country’s transport sector.
Road transport remains the single largest contributor to air pollution in Rwanda, responsible for about 34 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. To address this challenge, the government has been promoting electric mobility, including motorcycles, private cars, and public transport vehicles.
AUTO24 has become a key partner in this national transition. Country Manager Ivan Ruzibiza said the company is dedicated to expanding access to clean vehicles that reduce environmental impact. He explained that passenger vehicles are among the top emitters of air pollutants, which is why the company is increasingly importing hybrid and electric models that help cut fuel use and carbon emissions.
The newly supplied fleet consists of Toyota Corolla Levin plug-in hybrid cars, which can operate on electric power alone for extended distances before switching to fuel when needed. The technology is expected to reduce operational costs for Treize Ride while supporting environmental protection.
Treize Ride CEO Pierre Canisius Niringiyimana said adopting electric vehicles aligns with Rwanda’s long-term green mobility plans. He noted that while the company has provided passenger transport services for two years, shifting to electric vehicles demonstrates a commitment to sustainability. He also said that partnering with AUTO24 ensures access to reliable and environmentally friendly options.
Rwanda aims to significantly increase the share of electric vehicles by 2030 as part of broader climate and public health goals. The World Health Organization has warned that air pollution increases the risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma and chronic respiratory illnesses, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women.
AUTO24’s latest delivery shows the growing involvement of the private sector in Rwanda’s clean transport transition, supporting a future where transportation is both sustainable and healthier for communities.
