Volkswagen unveils the all-electric ID. Buzz in Kigali

Volkswagen Rwanda has taken another step in the nation’s shift toward cleaner transportation, unveiling the all-electric ID. Buzz during a launch event in Kigali on October 29, 2025. The model, inspired by the classic VW Microbus, arrives as a new option within the country’s growing electric vehicle market and signals the automaker’s long-term investment in Rwanda’s transition to sustainable mobility.

The ID. Buzz combines a nostalgic design with the capabilities of a fully modern electric vehicle. According to Volkswagen Rwanda, the minivan has a driving range suited for both city commuting and longer interprovincial routes.

The interior is designed to accommodate families, small businesses, and ride-sharing operators, while integrated digital systems offer features such as voice assistance and navigation tailored for regional use. The vehicle also supports fast-charging technology, which Volkswagen says will enable practical adoption as Rwanda expands its charging network.

Executives at the launch noted that multiple configuration options and a variety of exterior colors would be available, reflecting a market strategy that aims to appeal to lifestyle buyers as well as commercial operators.

The arrival of the ID. Buzz coincides with national initiatives aimed at cutting emissions and modernizing transportation. The government has introduced measures encouraging the adoption of electric mobility, including reduced import duties on EVs and efforts to develop charging infrastructure within urban centers.

Volkswagen introduced the e-Golf in Rwanda several years ago as its first step into the local EV market. The ID. Buzz, positioned as a more versatile vehicle, reflects the company’s expanding role in Rwanda’s automotive transition. Company representatives stated that additional electric models and charging solutions are being evaluated for future deployment.

At the unveiling, a Volkswagen spokesperson said the launch represents “a continuation of our commitment to innovation and sustainable mobility in Rwanda.” Industry stakeholders, including environmental advocates and technology partners, attended the event and emphasized the need for continued collaboration to ensure widespread EV adoption.

Market availability and outlook

Pre-orders for the ID. Buzz has opened, with pricing expected at approximately RWF 62,900,000. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2026. Volkswagen Rwanda confirmed plans to scale service support and charging accessibility in line with vehicle sales.

Rwanda’s broader green mobility strategy continues to evolve, with electric buses and motorcycles already operating in Kigali and other corporations exploring local assembly opportunities. The introduction of the ID. Buzz adds another dimension to this shift, offering consumers a new electric option in a market preparing for steady growth.
