Rusizi, Rwanda – A 70-year-old man, Nteziryimana Alfred, was found dead by hanging in what authorities suspect was a suicide. Neighbors report that family disagreements over his desire to remarry may have contributed to the incident.
The tragic discovery occurred on the morning of Friday, November 7, 2025. According to reports received by UMUSEKE, the man had been living alone for six years after the death of his wife. Local sources indicate that he reportedly threatened to take his own life due to perceived restrictions from his children regarding his wish to marry again.
Jean Pierre Iyakaremye, the Executive Secretary of Gihundwe Sector, confirmed the incident. “Indeed, Nteziryimana Alfred took his life using a rope. We learned about it on Friday morning. He was not married and lived with his younger sibling,” he said.
The man’s sibling, who has a disability, discovered him and alerted neighbors and authorities after finding him hanging in their home. Local officials and neighbors entered the house to confirm his death.
Iyakaremye added that the deceased had generally maintained good relationships with neighbors and family members. “Residents and neighbors told us that he often expressed the desire to end his life, but there were no reports of anyone preventing him from remarrying. His children simply asked that he follow legal procedures,” he said.
Authorities are urging citizens to seek help when facing personal crises and to pay attention to warning signs of suicide among community members.
The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), along with the police and other relevant agencies, is conducting an official investigation. The deceased’s body was transported to Gihundwe Hospital for examination.
