As school holidays commence, a growing number of educational institutions across Rwanda have launched vibrant summer camp programs, offering children engaging and enriching activities.
Among the prominent schools organizing these initiatives are Apacope, Mother Mary International School, Excel International School, Acorns International School, and many others, providing diverse opportunities for learning and development.
These summer camps are proving to be invaluable, with children enjoying a wide array of activities designed to stimulate their minds and bodies. Programs typically include singing classes, traditional dance, Abacus mental math, French language immersion, as well as popular sports like basketball and volleyball games. The structured environment ensures that children remain active and engaged, fostering holistic growth.

Parents have expressed strong approval for these holiday programs, finding them both useful and helpful. Cecile Nyiraneza, a parent who enrolled her children in a summer camp, highlighted the benefits. “This holiday program is helping sharpen the minds of our children, not only learning but also enabling them to use their time well, not spending most time watching television at home.” This sentiment underscores the desire for constructive engagement during the long break.
Each day at the summer camp is meticulously planned, with specific activities scheduled from Monday to Friday, typically running from morning to noon. This routine provides a structured yet enjoyable environment for the young participants.
Ferdinand Murengezi, another parent, echoed Nyiraneza’s appreciation. “The things being taught in this summer camp program are essential to our children. This will help them not to focus on social media and watching cartoons, which adds nothing to their brains. Here they study as well as play various games and participate in different activities, learning a lot. I appreciate teachers who take their time and spend it with our children. May God bless you, we recognize your hard work.”
His comments reflect a broader parental concern about screen time and a desire for more enriching experiences.
Beyond academic and physical activities, these programs also play a crucial role in social development. Through shared learning and play, children boost their interpersonal relations and engage in knowing each other, fostering new friendships. This interaction is vital in opening up their minds on how to live well with others, building essential social skills.

Audrey Kaliza, a student participating in a summer camp, enthusiastically shared her experience: “I’m really happy being here, we’re learning a lot, I encourage my fellow children to join us. We study, we play, we share stories, and a lot is happening. I appreciate my teachers who give themselves into this, we’re happy and enjoying it.” Her joyful testimony encapsulates the positive impact these summer camps are having on Rwanda’s children during their holidays.
