FOJO-supported investigative journalism training empowers MKU students

Journalism students from Mount Kigali University and the University of Rwanda (UR) participated in a four-day FOJO-supported training on investigative journalism held at Kigali Paramount Hotel from January 26 to January 29. The intensive program brought together aspiring journalists with a shared mission of strengthening professional skills, ethical standards, and practical knowledge essential for investigative reporting.

The training created a dynamic learning environment where students from both institutions engaged in in-depth discussions, practical exercises, and collaborative activities. Hosted at Kigali Paramount Hotel, the program offered a professional setting that reflected real newsroom conditions, encouraging participants to approach journalism with seriousness, confidence, and responsibility.

Throughout the four days, the training focused on the fundamentals and advanced practices of investigative journalism. Students learned how investigative reporting goes beyond daily news to uncover hidden truths, expose wrongdoing, and serve the public interest. Trainers emphasized the importance of curiosity, patience, and critical thinking in developing strong investigative stories.

Key lessons included identifying and developing investigative story ideas, conducting thorough research, verifying facts, and analyzing documents. Students were guided on how to use multiple sources, cross-check information, and avoid misinformation. Special attention was given to source protection and confidentiality, highlighting the responsibility journalists have toward individuals who provide sensitive information.

The program also explored journalistic ethics, accuracy, and accountability. Participants discussed ethical dilemmas commonly faced by investigative journalists and learned how to balance public interest with fairness and respect for human rights. Issues of media freedom, journalist safety, and responsible reporting were openly addressed, preparing students for real-world challenges in the media industry.

Another important aspect of the training was teamwork and collaboration. Mount Kigali University and University of Rwanda students worked together during group assignments, sharing perspectives and experiences. This interaction strengthened professional networks and demonstrated the value of collaboration in producing impactful investigative journalism.

Visual presentations and real-life case studies were used to illustrate successful investigative projects from different contexts. These examples helped students understand how investigative journalism can influence policy, promote transparency, and bring positive change to society. The interactive nature of the sessions allowed students to ask questions, exchange ideas, and gain practical insights from experienced trainers.

Participants expressed appreciation for the FOJO-supported initiative, describing the training as informative, inspiring, and transformative. Many students noted that the four-day program deepened their understanding of investigative journalism and reinforced their commitment to ethical media practice.

The FOJO-supported investigative journalism training held from January 26 to 29 at Kigali Paramount Hotel marked an important milestone in the academic and professional development of participating students. By equipping future journalists with essential skills, ethical awareness, and confidence, the program contributed to building a strong and responsible media sector in Rwanda.

With journalism continuing to evolve in the digital age, such trainings remain vital. They prepare young journalists to tell meaningful stories, hold power to account, and serve society with integrity. For Mount Kigali University and University of Rwanda students, this experience will remain a significant step toward their future careers in journalism.
