A 22-year-old woman traveling from Muhanga to Rubavu unexpectedly gave birth inside a passenger Coaster bus.
The incident occurred on Monday, November 10, 2025, when the woman went into labor while passing through Kazabe Sector in Ngororero District.
According to information obtained by IGIHE, the mother-to-be had left Nyamagabe after marriage and was heading to Rubavu, her hometown, to give birth.
As she began labor, the bus stopped and passengers alighted. Fortunately, a passing emergency medical team quickly responded, and a doctor on board assisted with the delivery. Another ambulance from Muhororo Hospital was called to provide follow-up care, and both mother and baby were transported safely to the hospital.
Dr. William Namanya, Director of Muhororo Hospital, confirmed to IGIHE that both the mother and her newborn are in good health. He stated, “The mother gave birth safely, and both she and the baby are doing well. She was assisted promptly by passing emergency responders, then transported to Muhororo Hospital for further care.”
Dr. Namanya explained that as a first-time mother, the early onset of labor may have caught her by surprise. The delivery had been expected around November 6, 2025, but it is common for labor dates to vary slightly.
He added that Rwanda’s investments in healthcare, including strengthening hospitals and community health workers, ensured that the incident was managed safely without complications.
