Over a Quarter of vehicles fail air pollution test in Rwanda

The Ministry of Environment (MINIRENA) has revealed that 26.4% of vehicles tested during a three-month campaign exceeded legal air pollutant limits, highlighting ongoing challenges in controlling vehicle emissions.

The announcement was made at a public inspection event held at the Remera Contrôle Technique center in Kigali, attended by top government officials including Minister of Environment Arakwiye Bernadette, Government Spokesperson Yolande Makolo, State Minister in Charge of Infrastructure Eng. Uwihanganye Jean de Dieu, Director General of REMA Kabera Juliet, Rwanda National Police Spokesperson ACP Rutikanga Boniface, and Kigali City Spokesperson Ntirenganya Emma Claudine.

Since the campaign began on 1 August 2025, a total of 9,118 vehicles were inspected across five Contrôle Technique centers nationwide. Of these, 77.4% passed the air pollution tests, while 22.6% failed and were required to address emission issues.

Minister Arakwiye emphasized the importance of participating in these inspections, noting that detected issues can be corrected. She encouraged vehicle owners to combine the regular Contrôle Technique inspection with the air pollution test for convenience.

Eng. Uwihanganye highlighted plans to expand inspection infrastructure, including a new large facility in Ndera, and to extend testing to additional vehicle types such as motorcycles.

Meanwhile, Irembo CEO Ismael Bimpe confirmed that the online platform now allows citizens to book air pollution tests in the same way as regular vehicle inspections, with plans to integrate services further for efficiency.
